Keeping the Adirondack Park safe and wild is the responsibility of all of us. Unfortunately that does not always work as there are always a few individuals that ruin the experience for the rest of us. To provide guidance, rules and regulations have been established by various organizations.

Listed below are a summary of the rules and regulations covering the Eastern High Peaks Region.

Unit Management Plans (UMP) Unit Management Plans (UMP) are plans intended to assess the natural and physical resources present within a unit, identify opportunities for recreational use and consider the ability of the resources and ecosystems to accommodate public use. Further, they identify management objectives for public use which are consistent with the land classification guidelines and the wild character of these lands.

Here is the UMP covering the High Peaks Wilderness Area for Essex, Franklin and Hamilton Counties.

Bear Canisters The Bear Canister Regulation for the Eastern High Peaks Region is mandatory between April 1 through November 30.
