Rainier Express

Volume 1, Number 3
March 7, 2005

Hello Team!

I have been busy with the planning phase of this trip. The website is starting to take shape and actually become useful. You will notice I have added a left menu button in the Membership Pages called "Event Planning". This is your one stop access to all posted information regarding the trip.

Tonight I added a Equipment Rental Services page. Bruce talked to them and reported they do rent to everyone regardless if they are working with RMI. Summit Haus should have everything you need, and more important, they are in Ashford where we will be staying.

NOTE: As shameless as it is, I have partnered with REI to promote their site here. It is my intention to have only one company sponsorship. I do not want this site to become a commercial site. However, it does cost to run it. If you require to purchase products from REI, please use the link at the left and HighPeaksClimbing.com will be supported. Thank You.

Glacier and Mountaineering Training!

I have talked to RMI about the One Day Climbing Course for our group. I will have the final details on Tuesday March 8th and I will post that information. To review the course, check here.

Unless I lost some communiqué I understand we will have 9 or 11 attendees. Please contact me to confirm your choice.

New Course Offering Page

I have included a new information page to get the word out on any local and recommended courses.

Long Hike

The idea has been proposed to try and get together as a group to do a long hike. The suggestions have been in the Whites or the Catskills. We are working out the details now. The target date is mid May or early June.

If you are looking at doing a long hike and want to do this hike as a fund raiser, Jay is sponsoring the "Escape the Escarpment" day hike in the Catskills to benefit The Brain Tumor Society. This hike is May 21st.

Permits

I am working on obtaining any and all information whether we need permits. In the past I have always been able to walk in and get one on demand. The rangers keep 40% of available slots open for walkups, however our group will be large enough that I want to make sure we have permits on April 1st when we can apply for them.

Suggested Training Climbs

Originally I wanted to us VfTT for distributing information on training climbs between our group. However, I went ahead and created a page to post practice climbs, check here. To add a climb to the list, submit the information here.

Lodging

I am still working on a group plan for lodging in Ashford. I'll keep you posted on what I can arrange. I need to finalize the training program with RMI to determine if we will need one or two nights for accommodations.

Travel Plans

Everyone has completing making airline reservations. I guess we are excited with anticipation. The need for auto rental is not required now, however, if you wish please contact fellow team members and see if you want to share vehicles. A mini-van would be the best option providing room for 4 members plus gear.

My Crazy Ideas

I am seriously thinking of playing on a 14K's in Colorado, California or Washington in mid-June or early July. If you are interested, let me know.

Next Newsletter

Volume 4 will focus on rope techniques. I originally wanted to do rope techniques in Vol 3, but I am not ready. I'll continue to keep you informed on travel plans, permits and other pertinent information regarding out West Coast Invasion Trip.
