TBTS - Catskill Hike

We had a very successful benefit hike for The Brain Tumor Society. The hike took place in the Catskill region along the Escarpment Trail. The full length of the hike was 23.2 miles. There were 5 from our West Coast Invasion group that participated. Our original plans were to include some rope practice on Sunday, but with tired feet and rains, we decided to postpone the rope training.

I wish to extend a special thanks to Jay for organizing this event!

Presidential Traverse - NH

Our next major practice session will be held in New Hampshire on Saturday, June 18th. This practice climb will be along the Presidential Traverse which is approximately 20 miles and 8,500 elevation gain. Check here for a full description of the traverse provided by Mohamed Ellozy.

I strongly suggest that all 12 of us participate. This will probably be our last opportunity to practice as a group.

I will post more details on locations and times in a separate page as I get more details.

Team Meals

It is time to start planning our meal needs that we will need in Camp Muir and on summit day. As I look at our team structure, I will suggest that you work with your tent mate on sharing meals. This is based on the fact that every rope team has at least two stoves. For example, Carol and I will work together to determine 2 person meals. Then we will split the weight of those meals between us.

Here are some suggestions:

Day One : Arrive into Camp Muir

  • Have a hearty breakfast near the Bunkhouse.
  • Fresh or dehydrated fruit.
  • PowerGels.
  • 1/2 a sub sandwich -or- bagels.

Day One : Evening Camp Muir

  • Soup and 1/2 Sub -or- Pasta dinner.
  • Light dessert (Blueberry Cheese cake, Mountain House).
  • Cheese / Crackers / Wine.

Day Two : Breakfast

  • Granola -or- Scrambled Eggs with bacon/ham/mushrooms.
  • Tang or other powdered drinks.
  • Coffee / Hot Chocolate (without the Dr.).

Day Two : Lunch

  • Light snack - soup & sandwich (prepared sandwich spread, etc.).
  • Fruit.

Day Two : Pre-Summit Dinner

  • Pasta Dinner (Knorrs Pesto or Alfredo, pasta etc.).
  • Mini-bagel or rolls.
  • Dessert.

Day Three : Summit Bid

  • PowerGels / PowerBars.
  • Powdered Gatorade or other energy drink.
  • Dehydrated Fruit.
  • Bagels.
  • Cheese / Sausage.
  • High Calorie Muffins (I'll supply a recipe).

Sherpa taught me a good lesson last year on an extended trip we did. To save space, take your dehydrated foods and repackage it into sealed bags. This reduce weight and bulk in your pack. Of course only do this to foods you know will be used.

I do not plan on putting a food assignment page up on the web figuring you will work it out together with your individual rope teams, or tent mates. I would suggest that you use the HPC Forum which will show the planning and to share ideas.

Team Community Gear

I am hoping to have all community gear assignments completed by the Presidential Hike weekend. We have spent the past few weeks gathering all equipment and we should have sufficient knowledge of any missing items by now. If you know of any missing items, please acquire it before then. Post a question in the HPC Forum if you are missing anything. Bring all your equipment to this hike so we can split it between the team members.

I'll bring a scale with me to the Presidential weekend and on Sunday we can go over the splitting of the shared equipment. For example, Carol and I will split the tent, food, fuel and other common items we will need as a twosome. With Yvonne and Marco, we will discuss all rope team common items such as the food (if we make a large meal), rope and pickets to help balance the loads.

Car Rentals

I would like to know this is completed. How are we doing?
