The North Face, Mountain Light

No matter how The North Face tries to turn toward fashion, some products always keep me coming back! This is one of those products. I have two of these two-layer GorTex jackets and I swear by them. They have withstood the beating of long bushwhacks in the Adirondack winters and show no sign of wear.

The North Face Denali Jacket

Probably the best Polartec Jacket available. Can be used as a mid layer under a shell or as a out layer on those cold days. Made from PolarTec 300 water-repellent fleece fabric. Upper body and elbows are constructed with Supplex nylon making it ideal to handle the wear of carrying backpack.

Gear Review

One tough jacket! I especially liked the warmth it retained during a rain storm when I did not have my shell. Good ventilation when needed. Can be zipped into other The North Face shells.

Pros:
Great warmth. The draw cord at the bottom adjusts well to your torso.

Chest and lower pockets are oversized providing enough space even for a Nalgene bottle. Small pocket available for keys and other small item gear.

Cons:
The elastic on the sleeves are not adjustable, and in fact, does not close well on my wrists.

Wear Points : Supplex nylon reinforcement.
Pockets : 4
Weight : 26 ounces.

REI Mistral Pants

All-purpose mountaineering pants made from an innovative fabric by Schoeller of Swizerland. Quick to dry, breaths very well, and comfortable. The fabric is coated with 3XDRY to keep you dry. These pants will become your favorite for climbing.

Gloves and Hats

Outdoor Research Seattle Sombrero

Waterproof and breathable utilizing Gore-Tex and a wicking liner. This is a good all-season hat. Fold down the flaps when it is raining and keep yourself dry.

This is a heavy duty hat and under normal climbing conditions you will sweat which the Gore-Tex will not evaporate fast enough. That is a small tradeoff to keep the rain off your neck and shoulders.

Dr. Shade Long Billed Cap

This is a welcomed hat to protect your neck from the burning effects of the sun.

The North Face Nuptse Down Mittens

Breathable down mittens for your cold-weather adventures. Insulated with 600-fill-power goose down and covered with HyVent™ Nylon taffetta laminated fabric. To assist gripping, the mittens are lined with genuine goatskin leather.

The North Face Pamir Windstopper Gloves

Great pair of gloves! I really like the lightweight insulation and Windstopper properties..

Boots and Gaiters

Koflach Degre Plastic Boot

OK, this is your choice no need to go further.

Vasque Alpine GTX II Boots

This is your second choice. Crampon compatible and comfortable out of the box. This is a good choice for us North Easterners as they can be used in winter without the weight of plastic boots.

Note: these are discontinued boots, but if you can find a pair, get them.

Vasque Sundowner Summit GTX

This is one pair of boots that requires almost no break in period. Is it the added comfort built into the collar and ankle area? I don't know. But I have been so pleased with the performance I am now on my second pair. In 2005, I used these on Mount Hood and Mount Rainier. I know it was pushing the limits on glacier travel, but I used rigid crampons and I truly enjoyed the comfort and lighter weight.

Technical Details

Construction:
Upper: 2.6mm Waterproof smooth leather
Sole : Vibram
Lining : 3-Ply knit nylon with Gor-Tex
Protection : Extra rubber toe rand
Padding : Extra around collar and ankles
Weight : 3 pounds, 8 ounces (Mens, Size 9).

Outdoor Research Expedition Gaiters

Extra tough for all winter use. 3-Layer Gor-Tex® for breathable, yet dry comfort. Heavy duty crampon patch to protect you.
