The planned trip of the Dix Range started at the North
Fork of the Boquet River located approximately 1.4 miles north of the
interchange of routes 9 and 73. Parking is limited and if not fully
plowed, parking can be found within 0.5 miles north or south of this
point. There is a stone bridge crossing the river at this point.
The hike in along the North Fork is mostly flat to
Lillypad Pond located at 1.0 miles. At 1.8 miles the herd path joins the
South Fork branch. Following the South Fork branch, you begin a gradual
ascent to 4.0 miles. The herd path turns left to follow a direct line to
the col between South and East Dix at elevation 3,900.
Turn left and follow a direct line to the summit of
East Dix, elevation 4,012. The summit is a distinct collection of
rock
outcroppings. Return to the col and continue along the ridge to the summit
of South Dix, elevation 4,060.
Crossing over the summit, descend down steep open rock
to the col between Macomb and South Dix. The herd path up Macomb is a
moderate climb consisting of bushwhacking along the ridge directly to
the summit.
Retrace your route back to South Dix. Before you
return to the summit, turn left and follow the herd path to Hough
following the ridge line. Passing over Pough, the bushwhacking becomes
more difficult and the ascent becomes steeper as you arrive at the
summit of Hough.
The herd path from Hough to Dix follows the ridge line
over the Beckhorn of Dix. The trail becomes less steep past the Beckhorn
until you reach the summit of Dix. The actual summit is the first rock
expanse you come to when arriving.
Passing over the Dix summit, blue trail marker are now
visible. Follow the trail markers approximately 0.3 miles to a junction
with the trail to Hunters Pass. Turn right and descend Dix rapidly for
0.5 miles. During this winter trip, much of the descent can be done
glissading. The hike back to route 73 is mostly flat for 4.6 miles. |
